Run through this checklist at three moments: the day before, in the morning, and at the trailhead. If the morning conditions no longer match the plan, postpone the hike or use your backup route.

The day before
- Check that the route suits the least experienced participant
- The distance and elevation gain, terrain, and exits are checked
- Forecast, warnings, trail closures and permits are checked
- Turn-back time is set; sunset and last transport are known
- A backup plan is chosen in case conditions change
- Someone at home has the route and check-in time, plus the group list
- The local emergency number is saved
- Phone and power bank are charged; the offline map is tested in airplane mode
- Confirm that water and food, plus an emergency snack, are packed
- Check that the rain shell, warm layer, and dry socks are packed
- First aid and medication, sun protection, and insect protection are packed
- Headlamp, whistle, documents, cash, and a rubbish bag are packed
- Shoes and the backpack have been tested
- Shared equipment is assigned; the group knows about allergies and medical conditions
In the morning
- Everyone feels well: no fever or acute pain
- The forecast is rechecked and there are no official warnings
If either fails, postpone the hike or change the plan.
At the trailhead
- Leader and sweep are assigned; everyone waits at junctions
- The plan for someone falling behind is agreed
- Turn-back time and the first checkpoint are repeated to the group
- Laces and straps are adjusted; the phone is protected from rain
- The trailhead board is checked for closures or detours
